In 2010, Ferrari revived the legendary “GTO” name for the 599 GTO, a road-going version of the extreme 599XX track car. With only 599 units built, the car blended cutting-edge technology with the soul of a front-engined V12 GT. It marked Ferrari’s fastest-ever road car at the time and remains one of the most collectible modern Ferraris.
Heritage of the GTO Name
The “GTO” badge, standing for Gran Turismo Omologato, first appeared on the legendary 250 GTO of the 1960s, followed by the 288 GTO in the 1980s. Bringing back the name for the 599 was a bold move, as it carried enormous expectations.
Engineering and Performance
The 599 GTO used a 6.0-liter V12 producing 661 horsepower at 8,250 rpm. Derived from the Enzo’s engine, it delivered breathtaking acceleration: 0–100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and a top speed over 335 km/h. With a 6-speed F1 SuperFast gearbox, lightweight construction, and advanced aerodynamics, the 599 GTO was a technological showcase.
Design
While based on the standard 599 GTB Fiorano, the GTO featured aerodynamic tweaks, a more aggressive front end, and a race-inspired diffuser. Inside, lightweight materials and Alcantara emphasized performance, while still offering GT comfort.
Reception and Collectability
The 599 GTO was universally praised for its balance of performance and usability. Limited production ensured exclusivity, and values have steadily risen. Today, it stands as a bridge between Ferrari’s analogue era and the new wave of advanced, electronically assisted cars.
Conclusion
The Ferrari 599 GTO honored the past while pushing into the future. It revived a legendary nameplate with worthy performance, cementing its place among Ferrari’s modern greats.
